A conversation I've been having quite often lately with creatives is around the idea of success. For some reason this word and theme continue to pop up in conversations, in articles I'm reading, in Instagram quotes & so much more.

And overall, what I'm hearing is that people expected to have reached success or to have been successful by now. Even me.

I find this thought & belief so interesting.

I was watching Amanda Seales' stand up the other day called I Be Knowin on HBO. And she very briefly mentioned her age - 37.

She's been acting, singing and doing comedy since she was in college - maybe earlier. And she just reached one of her biggest milestones in her career at the age of 37 - having her own comedy stand up special funded & hosted by HBO.

For the sake of this conversation, let's say she started this career the day she walked on her college campus at age 18 or 19. This would mean that it's taken her nearly 20 years to reach her biggest milestone.

20 years.

On The LoDownLiving Podcast I talk about how Gabrielle Bernstein shared her mission and work around NYC for 5 years for free before being paid to speak about spirituality and meditation.

5 years.

I read an article the other day that said that Julia Child, the amazing cook we've all heard of, didn't even learn to cook until she was 36.

In this same article, it was also said that Viola Davis - you know her from How To Get Away With Murder, The Help & so much more - didn't receive her first Academy Award nomination until she was 43 years old.

43 years old.

There are so many more inspirational people I could mention with stories similar to this - Oprah, Ellen, Vera Wang, Meryl Streep, etc.

So why in the hell are we pressuring ourselves to be successful & profitable in 6 months, 1 year or anything like this?

For me, I know I've let the stories from other creatives seep into my head & heart and have made them my own. Somehow I made their story my competition and I've been judging my success based off of theirs.

Another thing I've noticed is that I've believed that some of these stories happened overnight. You know - like, an overnight success. 

And so, I believed that was true & possible for me, too.

But their story isn't my story. And I'm only setting myself up for disappointment.

If you're currently in the thick of your creative business - no matter if you're just starting out, been at this for a while or are a seasoned veteran - and you're feeling the business blues, maybe it's time you reconsider what unnecessary burdens you're putting on yourself.

Which Instagram famous influencer, big time blogger or girl boss creative are you comparing yourself to?

Do you know her true story from beginning to end?

Do you know what it took her to get to where she is now?

Do you even know if the type of "success" she has is what you want for yourself?

Being inspired by other creatives is completely okay. But when we start comparing where we are on our journey with where other's are on their's - that's when we stunt our own growth.

You deserve to take your time, learn your business in your own way & on your own time.

Your business & success are yours alone. Know that & stand in that firmly.
